Kathryn Apel

Date of Success: Book Published 2009

Kathryn is passionate about words and working with children. That’s why the primary teacher writes children’s books. Kat lives on a family property on the Central Queensland Coast, with her cat-astrophic husband, Felix, and their two sons. Kat will never run out of things to write, because the males in her life are always making mischief and chaos. Many of Kat’s stories and poems are quirky tales of life in rural Australia. She turns disaster into laughter.

Kathryn’s chapter book, ‘Fencing with Fear’ was published in 2008. Her rhyming picture book, ‘This is the Mud!’ was published in 2009 and celebrated at the 2009 CYA Conference. Kat loves playing with words!

WHAT CYA CONFERENCE DID FOR ME:

‘It is hard to state the impact the CYA has had on my writing journey.

The CYA Competition gave me;

  • feedback on my writing.
  • an opportunity to jump the slush pile and land my manuscript clear on the editor’s desk.
  • credibility and credentials
  • hope (so vital!)
  • and eventually… my first published picture book!

The CYA Conference took me out of my bubble of isolation and introduced me to lots of warm and wonderful children’s writers, illustrators, and other industry professionals, many of whom I correspond with regularly today.

I give it a wholehearted, very muddy, recommendation!

Kathryn won 1st Place in the Published Author Competition Section with her verse novel for younger readers in 2012 - Bully on the Bus is  coming in July 2014, published by UQP.
