Lucia is an artist, full time painter and illustrator of children books. She’s born and bred in Livorno, Tuscany, where bushes smell of rosemary and saltiness. She moved to Brisbane in 2006 and started working as a self represented artist starting up a business to sell her paintings to America, Europe and Australia.

Since 2008 she has been working with Australian book Publishers: Hardie Grant Egmont and Penguin. Lucia has published four children books: When No-One is Looking, On the Farm/At the Zoo, The Boy and The Toy and Family Forest.

What others had to say about her books:

When No-one’s looking – “the painted illustrations have bold brown outlines, a warm and bright colour palette and a texture finish that adds depth to the pictures” Genny Gorman, Magpies, Jul 2009

The Boy and the Toy - “Lucia Masciullo is a talented creative artist and her whimsical artwork is a clever foil for Sonya Hartnett’s story line. “ Christine Horsfield, Magpies, May 2010.

Family Forest -  “…is beautifully illustrated by Lucia Masciullo [whose] colorful and quirky illustrations beautifully complement the text.” Lynnis Bonanno, Daily Mercury, 8th May, 2010.

As I was making my first timid steps in the world of  Australian Illustration I decided to participate in the 2007 contest held by the CYA Conference.  I was lucky enough to win two prizes! First prize in the category Illustration with Sleeping train, a personal interpretation of Anita Bell text and the second prize in the category Graphic Novel with my story The Castle of Stale Bread.

Now, as if it hadn't been exciting enough, one year later I was contacted directly by editor Katrina Webb, Penguin Australia, who told me they noticed my illustrations on the CYA Conference website and asked me to send a portfolio.

Three months later my collaboration with Penguin started (and I was on the moon!) . I began  on a fantastic project, authored by Sonya Hartnett . This book was released in May 2010.

Now I am collaborating with Penguin on more amazing projects that will keep me busy for the next few years.

Thank you CYA for this fantastic kick-start to my dream career as Illustrator!
