Date of Success - Competition Winner 2009

(Book contracted in 2010)

I was born in Brisbane, but grew up on Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast.  As a child I was always surrounded by pets and quickly turned into an animal fanatic.  At 11, I made the connection between the cow and the steak and turned vegetarian. Apart from animals, my other great interests as a child were writing and reading.

Although my first publishing success came early (a poem in the high school magazine) 18 long years in the public service dampened my creative spark. Luckily I opted for a career change, began teaching (before succumbing to death by forms) and rediscovered my love of writing, particularly for children.

In 2005 my junior novel D.O.G. was published (Macmillan) and last year saw the publication of Dog Logic, which was ‘written’ by my clever dog, Sox ‘The Philosophical Pooch’. He even has his own Facebook page

My CYA journey began in 2007 when I entered a number o f manuscripts into the CYA competition.  Although I didn’t win, the feedback was fantastic.  My results ranged from 8th through to 41st.

In 2009, I entered again and was delighted to win first and highly commended in the picture book section.  Interestingly, my previous 41st entry was the winner this time - if at first you don’t succeed…! My wins gave me two lovely certificates, some cash (always nice) and most importantly, confirmation that I could write.

2010 became my year of submissions. I even had the courage to organise pitching sessions with editors and an agent at the 2010 CYA Conference.  I’m pleased to say that 2010 also became my year of success, with Dog Logic – a pooch’s guide to dogs behaving badly being published by Big Sky, Sydney.

CYA has changed the way I view myself; from dabbling amateur to serious writer.  Thanks so much Tina and Ally!

Update from Robyn: (March 2016)

In 2009 I received a Highly Commended in the Picture Book (Primary) for my manuscript, Going Fishing.  In 2014, I was fortunate to have Going Fishing & it's companion book, Going Camping trade published by Big Sky Publishing (Sydney). Going Camping has also made it onto the Qld Premier's Reading Challenge Booklist (Prep to Grade 1). As you would be aware, getting one picture book published as a relatively unknownauthor is very difficult due to the high production costs, to get two published is amazing.  You may also be interested to know that Going Fishing won highly commended in the CYA Picture Book Primary category in 2009.  The feedback I got from the judges was so positive and encouraging that I kept plugging away...and finally hit the jackpot. Interestingly, I also won first in that category, but as yet have been unable to get that manuscript published.

At the 2011 CYA competition, my YA novel Midget Bone's Diary was shortlisted and ultimately came fourth in the Published Author category. Once again, the positive feedback gave me the confidence to keep approaching publishers. The great news is that in November 2014, Midget Bones'Diarywas trade published by Puppy Care Education, as both a paperback and an ebook.

So, out of my five published books, two won awards at the CYA Conferences.

I think you should all take a bow for that!

Update from Robyn: (May 2017)

My sixth book (and third picture book) My Dog Socks, is currently in production with Melbourne based Ford Street Publishing. The talented illustrator for My Dog Socks is Sadami Konchi, a Sydney-based fine artist and prize-winning portraitist who specialises in water colour.   My Dog Socks is due for release in late 2017.
