2013 Competitions Open

2nd January 2013

CYA Writing and Illustrating Competition 2013 is now open! Wahoo!

BECKET blue-flipped

There has been no price increase for the CYA Conference competitions, so its still great value for money with  everyone getting feedback, and the chance to get an editor to read your work in front of the slush pile (if you shortlist):

Cost: Aspiring/unpublished: $16.50 and $17.50 PayPal payments respectively.

Published Authors: $33.00 or $36.00 through PayPal.

Hatchlings: $11.00 and $11.50 through PayPal.

This year we have made a few changes to the competition, so READ the guidelines carefully.

Changes especially to note are ( but not limited to):

Aspiring Category 4 - Chapter Books writing section.

a)    Text only for younger primary aged children. First 1000 words.

b)    Text only for older aged children (Middle Grade). First 1000 words.

Aspiring Category 5 - Young Adult writing section

Required: First three chapters up to 3000 words and a page single spaced synopsis.

a)    Judged by CYA: First 1000 words in English. Open theme. Rest: UNJUDGED by CYA.

b)    Short listed: Final judge will read your synopsis and your chapters.

New section: Aspiring Section 7 & added to Hatchlings Category 3. Middle Grade Illustrated Novel:
First 500 words in English & 2 major illustrations. Set out as you would on a page (See Brian Falkner – Northwood or Michael Gerard Bauer & Joe Bauer’s – Eric Vale Epic Fail, or Jodi Picoult & Samantha Van Leer – Between The Lines, for examples of this category – it's varied and exciting.)

All Art Works: We have asked that we can keep the hard copies of the artworks sent in. We plan on taking the artworks to Africa. If you don’t want this to happen, please let us know and we will return them to you.

So, get your entries in by 30th April 2013, and GOOD LUCK!

You will notice that this year we have an African theme to the illustration section that we have provided. This is to coincide  with the container of books that will be leaving early this year, and (cross fingers) the Author and Illustrator visit to The Mother Africa Trust where will be encouraging literacy and creativity through illustration.
