We have had several calls today from flood effected people in NSW. Because of this, we are extending the closing date for the CYA Conference Competitions to 5pm EST, SUNDAY 3rd May 2015. 

For those flood effected - if you are one who was effected and still need more time beyond this - please contact us directly.

8 Days and counting…

Hello everyone

We have a few updates for you in this Newsletter, so thank you for you time.

Competition deadline: 30th April 2015
A quick reminder that in 8 days time, the CYA Conference Competitions close. It is time to get those entry/ies in NOW...Remember we are here to help you, so if you need to ask questions, are not sure of anything, shout ...call us or email. 

FYI: I will be up until midnight if anyone had a last minute problem, like always to help - but try and not leave it till the nth hour as the system gets real busy in those last few days! Tel: 0408 751 208 or 07 3408 7885, but no calls will be taken after midnight.

Editors On Site: 
It is with great pleasure that we add to our line up this year - Marisa Pintado, the commissioning editor of children’s and YA fiction at 
Hardie Grant Egmont. Marissa with be looking at middle-grade and YA fiction in particular, and also proposals/samples for junior fiction series. Open to all genres but particularly interested in contemporary, horrors, thrillers for YA, and humour, adventure and mysteries for MG in her 2015 one on one appointments.

A brilliant line up of industry professionals to be your work assessed and read by. Remember to book who you want to see, because the editors do sell out. 

Volunteer Judges for Competition:
CYA Conference is looking for Volunteer judges, you don't have to be published, just have a love of childrens and YA books and be prepared to get the work read and commented on, and give your own opinion. Obviously we work to a tight judges deadlines so meeting that is important too. You will use a simple online form system and there are guidelines to follow.  You can judge from a few entries to many entries - it's your choice.

You can enter the competition in one section and judge in another as you will not have access to the other section entries at all. 

Don’t forget that if you have judged more than 15 Chapter and YA entries, or 25 Picture Books your conference fees drops down to $75.00 in lieu of payment for your hard work.

SEQ Hatchling Special:
This year we have decided to implement a Schools Package for Hatchlings (8 - 18 years old). If you are a school and bring a group of 10 children to CYA Conference, the cost drops to $120 per child (normally $160.00) You can 'buddy up' with another school, but the names and school details need to be sent to us directly, and we will invoice the schools for payment before conference. Your views required to help in Masters Of Writing:
Dear CYA Conference people,
I am doing a feature article on the CYA Conference, as part of my Masters of Writing. I have to do some interviews with people (helpers, organizers and authors/artists). The interview is brief, so as not to take too much of your time, but even if you only have five minutes for some short responses, it would be invaluable. A written response is all I need, sometime in the next few weeks.

The questions are:
1) When and how did you first hear about the CYA Conference? (And are you a writer/artist or helper or both?)
2) If you’re a repeat attendee, what has drawn you to return each year?
3) What in your opinion is the most valuable aspect of the CYA Conference, and what success have you found?

Another editor on site & Update on appoitments

So, because everyone is booking out the editor sessions so fast, we are supplying more editors… yay!!!! 

This year we welcome back Suzanne O’Sullivan from Hachette, Australia. 

Suzanne is the commissioning editor for Lothian Children’s books, the children’s imprint of Hachette Australia

She has worked in the book industry for over a decade, and has spent most of that time in children’s books, editing everything from board books to YA/crossover fiction. 

At Lothian she publishes authors and illustrators including Lachlan Creagh, Mandy Foot, Ursula Dubosarsky, Mark Wilson, Cheryl Orsini, E. Coombe, Karen Erasmus and Felicity Gardner. 

For her one-on-one assessments at CYA Conference 2015,  Suzanne will be looking at: All aspects of CYA literature in her 2015 one on one appointments.


Just an update … Lisa Berryman’s appointments are now SOLD OUT. A reminder that the following editors will be onsite, and we encourage you to have a look at their pages to ensure that you book with someone who is looking at your genre.

Editors on site update

We are happy and excited to share the news that Kristina Schulz from University Queensland Press is joining us onsite during 2015 conference - and will be doing 15minute editor appointments - yeah!

Also, please note that Katrina Lehman from Penguin is now full and all her appointments are booked up.

There are a few appointments left free with other editors, so if you were planning on an editor appointment, get in and book now because they are becoming hot property! 

Reminder: Competition all close on 30th April - thats the end of the month so start sending in those entries!
