Hatchlings Competition Closing Date Extended to 31st July 2011

Owing to the unblocking issue of the CYA web site by EDU QLD, CYA has decided to 

EXTEND HATCHLINGS COMPETITION deadline for entry to 31st July. 

So you now have your holidays to get your entry ready! Good luck! 

For Alligators (Adults) your deadline remains 30th June 2011.

Introducing: Anna Bartlett - Children’s and Young Adult Editor, Interactive Publications

CYA introduces you to Anna Bartlett,  Children’s and Young Adult editor at Interactive Publications, an independent publishing house in Brisbane. Ann will be another of our onsite editors on Sunday 11th September 2011. 

Before joining IP in early 2008, she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Production at QUT.

Anna has worked with authors and illustrators such as Hazel Edwards, Libby Hathorn, Mark Carthew, Edel Wignell, Dianne Bates and Heath McKenzie, as well as CYA success stories Peter Allert and Celine Eimann.


Anna’s first novel, A Penny in Time, historical fiction aimed at 8-12 year olds, was released in February 2011.

Anna will see all aspects of the CYA writing genre in her onsite assessments. 

Please Note: Anna will NOT be at Alligators on Saturday, but will take Alligator Assessments during HATCHLING Time on SUNDAY. 

Alligators: To book Anna, simply choose her on the ALLIGATORS booking form, and we will let you know what time you are to see her on SUNDAY. ( This means you don’t miss out on seeing Anna!) 

Hatchlings - simply choose Anna on your booking form for Sunday.

Introducing: Lisa Berryman, Children’s Publisher, HarperCollins Publishers Australia

CYA introduces you to Lisa Berryman, Children’s Publisher  at HarperCollins Publishers Australia who will be another of our onsite editors on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September 2011. 

Lisa has been the children’s publisher at HarperCollins Publishers Australia for eleven years and in her long publishing career she has worked for a number of different publishing houses including Reed Books Australia where she was children’s publisher. Lisa has also worked in children’s television at the Australian Children’s Television Foundation and taught Editing and Publishing at RMIT in Melbourne. 

Lisa commissions the HarperCollins children’s list, which is comprised of titles ranging from picture books to young adult. Lisa publishes a number of best-selling Australian authors and illustrators including Alexandra Adornetto, Duncan Ball, Rod Clement, Jackie French, Susanne Gervay, Alison Goodman, Nette Hilton, Jeni Mawter, Fiona McIntosh, James Moloney and Bruce Whatley, plus UK author, Anna Perera and US authors Claudia Gray and Michael Spradlin and Canadian author, Arthur Slade. 

Lisa will be looking at all aspects within the CYA genre except Graphic Novels and Non-fiction works for her one-on-one assessments at CYA Conference.

Introducing: Sue Whiting,Children’s Book Editor, Walker Books, Australia

CYA welcomes to our onsite editors : Sue Whiting - Children’s Book Editor, Walker Books, Australia

Sue will be joining us as a presenter too - but we will highlight that accomplishment later...today we focus on Sue - the Editor! 

For the first twenty-five years of her working life, Sue was a primary school teacher with a special interest in literacy education and children’s literature. In 2005 Sue left teaching to pursue a career in publishing and now works as a children’s book editor. 

Sue loves sharing her passion for writing and story and her love of books and reading with others. She is nothing if not passionate and has been visiting and speaking at schools, libraries, conferences and literary festivals throughout Australia for a number of years.

Sue will be see across the whole spectrum of the CYA genre during her assessments at CYA Conference 2011.

Introducing: Nadine Bates, Creative Director, Hootenanny Books

CYA welcomes to our onsite editors - Nadine Bates.

Nadine is the Creative Director at Hootenanny Books, a small, indie publishing company that focuses on creating quality children’s content.

Previously a classroom English teacher, published children’s author and freelance writer/editor, Nadine founded Hootenanny Books (after the birth of her two sons) in order to devote her time to her true passions- children’s art and literature. Nadine has a love of interactive and digital content for kids and is currently producing both traditional and ebook/app formats of Hootenanny’s work. Through the magic of modern technology, she manages to balance the demands of the publishing world and her boisterous young family from her hilltop home in the Gold Coast Hinterland. 

She’s also a firm lover of coffee, chocolate and trashy vampire fiction.

Nadine will see Picture books and illustration portfolio’s during her assessments at CYA Conference 2011.

Introducing: Maryann Ballantyne - Publishing Director, Black Dog Books

CYA introduces you to Maryann Ballantyne from Black Dog Books who will be another of our onsite editors on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September 2011.

Maryann is passionate about bringing Australian stories to young readers and has over 25 years experience in the industry. 

Have a look at the Black Dog Books site, and see if you think you could fit into this publishing house with your manuscript...you do? Then consider booking an assessment/pitch with Maryann.

Maryann is the Final Judge for the Published Authors competition for 2011.

Program Released... the race to conference has begun...

CYA Conference is happy to release our programs for both Alligators and Hatchlings today! Wahooo!!!!!

Our new location (with onsite free parking) St Laurence’s College is close to the train station too.
