Session 3     45 Min      Aaron Pocock ~ Crowd Funding ~ an adventure into ‘creating’ money.

Session 4    45 Min     Rebecca Timmis ~ Self-publishing: Is it really just a Plan B?

Session 5     45 Min     Karen Tayleur ~  Picture Books ~ What is a picture book? The Logistics – typical picture book design layouts (24pp and 32pp)  The Story – the story arc, the theme, the characters, the ‘hook’, rhyming, word count, illustrator suggestions, the author’s role, the illustrator’s role. The Pitch – presenting your story, approaching publishers, selling yourself. The Job – working with the publishing team (illustrator, editors, marketing, sales), agents, contracts.

Session 6    90 Min      Peter Carnavas ~  Let Your Pictures do the Talking ~ Learn to use simple and effective illustration techniques to let your pictures carry the weight of your picture book story.  Particularly useful for those wishing to write AND illustrate.

      15 Min     Afternoon Tea

Session 7     45 Min     Sue Whiting ~ Endings Matter.

Session 8    20 Min      CYA Success Stories ~ Kathryn Apel, Samatha Wheeler, Stella Tarakson, Karen Tyrrell, Caylie Jeffery and Cassandra Webb. 

5:00 PM     10 Min     Close of Conference. All attend as conference registration number wins a prize.

Session 5         45min   Wendy Orr ~ Building Characters from the Inside Out - If characters are what make books truly memorable, how do we create three-dimensional characters that readers can identify with? How does an adult write authentically as a child character?

In this masterclass, Wendy Orr, whose character Nim has captivated children from around the world, will cover
Assessing what kind of character suits the story
Using both sides of the brain to free up your creativity
Writing from the child within rather than the parent
Getting to know your character: choosing names, physical and emotional characteristics
Participants will leave with tools for creating a memorable fictitious character, and will complete a short piece putting this character into action.
