Clair Hume an the Commissioning Editor at University of Queensland Press (UQP).
Previously, Clair worked at Affirm Press, and Penguin Books. She’s enjoyed working with Pamela Allen, Graeme Base, Terry Denton, Rebecca Johnson, Will Kostakis and Marc Martin (just to name a few!).
Clair loves books that make kids laugh and wonder. She loves books with great characters and stunning illustrations. She loves books that stay in your heart so even when you're old and can't remember where you've left your teeth, you can still recall where the green sheep was.
Clair will be looking at picture books, junior fiction, middle grade, YA and illustrations.
Stories with fresh voices and perspectives, unforgettable characters, energised narratives, engaging pace and an overall sense of leaving readers better for having read them. And anything really funny across all age groups. Picture book manuscripts exploring new or under-represented themes AND well-worn themes that are explored in an original way. What makes your picture book story stand out from other published works with similar themes? Junior fiction that's age appropriate, sharp and engaging. Middle grade of all genres (so long as it's full of heart, adventurous and unforgettable). YA that's gripping, brave and authentic. Illustrators with their own unique style.
Clair will be providing verbal feedback with her assessments
