Mary Verney has been working in publishing for almost seventeen years. She left her job as a bookseller in Queensland to move to Sydney and work with Pan Macmillan and then Walker Books. She is currently a Senior Editor in the Young Readers team at Penguin Random House, working with authors including George Ivanoff, Deborah Abela, Dianne Wolfer, Renée Treml and A.L. Tait. Her favourite books from childhood are The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr and Hating Alison Ashley by Robin Klein.

Mary is looking for stories with child appeal, strong narrative voices, solid story arcs and dynamic world building.

Mary is also keen to see any nonfiction ideas for junior fiction. middle grade.

Mary will not be looking for rhyming picture books or YA fantasy.

Mary will be providing written feedback with her assessments


  • Agent & Editor sessions are only available to conference attendees.

  • Some editors have withdrawn from the conference due to it being an online-only event.
    If you have booked with one of them we will be in contact with you shortly.

  • You do need to be attending the conference to book an assessment. 

  • You may book your session before booking for the conference however there will be a $25.00 administration charge should you decide to cancel the appointment before assessment bookings closing on 15 May 2020 

  • No refunds will be made if you make an assessment booking but do not book for the Conference and your session will be cancelled.
