Kasey is an author, marine biologist and educator with a passion for connecting children to science and nature through storytelling and education.
Growing up on the coast of Victoria, Kasey spent her days beachcombing, surfing and exploring the rocky shores. As a child (and still as an adult), she was fascinated by the rock pools teeming with life, eagerly learning the names of all the creatures she discovered.
Her passion for the ocean led her to Western Australia, where she had the incredible opportunity to work with the famous Monkey Mia dolphins and loggerhead sea turtles.
Drawing on the latest science, Kasey writes to make science friendly and accessible. Her picture books are filled with both fun and facts.
Her debut picture book, Flute: A Dolphin’s Wild Journey Home, will be published by Wombat Books in August 2025. Her second book, The Great Shark Egg Case Hunt, will be released in October 2025 by CSIRO Publishing.
WHAT CYA CONFERENCE DID FOR ME
I have participated in the CYA conference for the last three years. In 2023, I signed a contract with Wombat Books following a manuscript assessment with Rochelle Stephens.
I almost cancelled my assessment, but I’m so glad I didn’t! I chose to trust my instincts and believe in the story I wanted to tell, and Rochelle instantly understood my vision. During our assessment, she talked about staying true to the narrative and ensuring the illustrations reflect that. By the end of our session, I knew she was the right fit! After the zoom session, I sat there in complete shock and disbelief, but obviously over the moon. This assessment resulted in the publication of my debut picture book, Flute: A Dolphin's Wild Journey Home.
I’m so grateful for the opportunities that CYA offers. I would highly recommend CYA to both aspiring and published authors. Every year, the speakers ignite my learning and creativity, motivating me to keep writing and submitting my work. This motivation, I believe, played a role in securing a second contract with CSIRO Publishing.
Stepping out of your comfort zone can be essential. It's important to build connections and create opportunities, as you never know what exciting possibilities may be just around the corner.
Thanks Tina and the CYA team!
