Karen Wasson
Karen Wasson is a children's author based in Melbourne. Her nonfiction picture book, Drop into the Ocean, illustrated by Marta Tesoro was published in 2024. Her debut graphic novel, Inked, illustrated by Jake Minton, was the first graphic novel to be shortlisted for Hardie Grant’s Ampersand Prize in 2022. It will be published in April 2025 by Figment, Hardie Grant’s new graphic novel imprint. Karen lives with her husband, their three children and their Story Dog, Henry.

Thinking Inside the Box - writing a graphic novel
A comprehensive introduction to the craft of writing graphic novels, focusing on storytelling, structure, and manuscript preparation, rather than illustration.
Participants will explore what defines a graphic novel, what makes the format so engaging for readers, and why it continues to grow in popularity across age groups and genres. The session will guide writers through the process of transforming narrative ideas into clear, effective graphic novel scripts—designed to be easily interpreted by artists, editors, and readers alike.
Note: This is a writing-focused workshop. No drawing skills are required or expected.
