Stef Gemmill

Stef Gemmill is an international award-winning children’s picture book and middle-grade fiction author. Her debut picture book, A Home for Luna won the 2020 Rubery Book Award (Children). Leaning on her background as a Montessori teacher, music journalist and technical writer she writes about complex concepts and issues in a unique style that places the reader in the shoes of the main character.


Currently a Writer in Residence for the Ardoch Education Charity, she loves to share her passion for writing by creating picture books with children in underprivileged schools. She lives on Waddawarrung Country on the Surf Coast of Victoria where she is surrounded by nature and story inspiration.

Symbolism in children's books - writing and illustrating

An introduction to the different types of symbolism in children’s writing and illustration. Stef will show you techniques and examples of how symbolism conveys deep messages and emotion without layers of detail and description. This workshop will lift your ‘show don’t tell’ techniques to another level making every word or image ‘work harder’ on the page. Attendees are invited to bring an illustration or writing extract to work on during this workshop.
