Kate Stevens - Editor Assessments

Kate Stevens has over sixteen years’ experience as an in-house book editor, most recently as an Associate Publisher at Hachette Australia, where she published a small list of emerging children’s authors and illustrators. Now based in Brisbane, Kate has been working as a freelance editor and a tutor in writing, editing and communication at UQ and QUT since early 2024. She also taught the postgraduate editing and publishing subject at UTS for three years running.

Kate attended the APA Residential Editorial Program in 2014 and the Leadership Strategies in Book Publishing course at Yale University in 2015 (funded by a grant from the Australia Council), and is currently writing her PhD thesis on the role of the editor in young adult fiction. She is particularly passionate about working with emerging children’s authors to help them develop their manuscripts and navigate the pitching and publication process.

As a freelance editor with lots of in-house experience, Kate loves working with children's authors to help them develop their manuscripts and their pitches to publishers. She's particularly interested in reading submissions for fiction and non-fiction picture books, middle-grade and young adult manuscripts.

She's not looking to assess manuscripts for adult readers.
